Southern Cream Cookies

This holiday favorite was inspired by the Better Homes and Gardens New CookBook, copyrighted in 1953. The recipe will make 6 dozen cookies.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs (well beaten)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 5 cups flour (sifted)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups walnuts, broken into pieces
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tsp baking powder

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°
  • Add shortening and 2 cups sugar to mixing bowl and cream
  • Add sour cream, eggs and vanilla to bowl and mix well
  • In separate bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda
  • Add sifted mixture to wet ingredients and mix well
  • Add nuts
  • Drop on to baking sheet from a teaspoon
  • Grease bottom of a small glass then dip into a mixture of cinnamon and sugar
  • Using the coated glass, press each cookie flat, dipping into cinnamon-sugar mix before flattening
  • Bake at 350 for 15 minuntes
