Southern Cream Cookies

This holiday favorite was inspired by the Better Homes and Gardens New CookBook, copyrighted in 1953. The recipe will make 6 dozen cookies.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs (well beaten)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 5 cups flour (sifted)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups walnuts, broken into pieces
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tsp baking powder

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°
  2. Add shortening and 2 cups sugar to mixing bowl and cream
  3. Add sour cream, eggs and vanilla to bowl and mix well
  4. In separate bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda
  5. Add sifted mixture to wet ingredients and mix well
  6. Add nuts
  7. Drop on to baking sheet from a teaspoon
  8. Grease bottom of a small glass then dip into a mixture of cinnamon and sugar
  9. Using the coated glass, press each cookie flat, dipping into cinnamon-sugar mix before flattening
  10. Bake at 350 for 15 minuntes
