Basic Bread

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 to 2 tbsp sugar or honey
  • 2 tbsp yeast
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1-1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 to 5 cups flour
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions
 

  • Combine water, sugar, and yeast. Stir, then allow to sit 10 minutes or until foamy.
  • Add remaining ingredients and knead for approximately 7 minutes.
  • Cover and allow to rise for 60 to 90 minutes, or until the dough doubles in size.
  • Punch down the dough, then divide in half.
  • Shape into two loaves, then place each into a greased loaf pan.
  • Cover and allow to rise 45 to 60 minutes, or until the dough doubles in size.
  • Brush an egg wash on each each loaf, then bake at 350 °F for 25 to 30 minutes.
