Butterscotch Thins

This holiday treat was inspired by the Better Homes and Gardens New CookBook, copyrighted in 1953. Makes 4 dozen cookies.

Ingredients
  

  • 1/4 cup butter/margarine
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups flour (sifted)
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°
  2. Melt butter and shortening
  3. Add sugars to the melted butter and shortening, mixing well
  4. Add egg, then beat until it becomes a light-colored mixture
  5. In separate bowl, sift together the flour and baking soda
  6. Stir dry ingredients into shortening mixture
  7. Add in vanilla and nuts
  8. Shape the mixture into rolls, approximately 1-1/2 inches in diameter
  9. Roll in wax paper
  10. Place in refrigerator and chill thoroughly
  11. Cut rolls into thin slices
  12. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 10 minutes
