Chocolate Drop Cookies

A Christmas cookie favorite. This vintage recipe was inspired by the Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook, copyrighted in 1953.

Ingredients
  

  • 1/4 cup butter/margarine
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 eggs
  • 2 oz unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 3/4 cups flour (sifted)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 400°
  • Combine butter and shortening in your mixing bowl and cream it together
  • Slowly add sugar and continue to mix
  • Add egg and mix thoroughly
  • Scrape down your bowl
  • Add melted chocolate, mixing well
  • Sift together flour, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl
  • Slowly add your dry mixture and milk to your cream, alternating between the two
  • Add vanilla, chopped nuts and stir
  • Drop by spoonful onto a baking sheet
  • Bake 8 to 10 minutes as cooking times may vary
  • Coat with powdered sugar or a frosting
