Chocolate Drop Cookies

A Christmas cookie favorite. This vintage recipe was inspired by the Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook, copyrighted in 1953.

Ingredients
  

  • 1/4 cup butter/margarine
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 eggs
  • 2 oz unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 3/4 cups flour (sifted)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 400°
  2. Combine butter and shortening in your mixing bowl and cream it together
  3. Slowly add sugar and continue to mix
  4. Add egg and mix thoroughly
  5. Scrape down your bowl
  6. Add melted chocolate, mixing well
  7. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl
  8. Slowly add your dry mixture and milk to your cream, alternating between the two
  9. Add vanilla, chopped nuts and stir
  10. Drop by spoonful onto a baking sheet
  11. Bake 8 to 10 minutes as cooking times may vary
  12. Coat with powdered sugar or a frosting
